Heat is lost at the window

The window glass is the weak point of every outer wall: here the most heating warmth escapes in winter, and the most heat enters in summer. A roller blind places a additional textile layer in front of it and creates a still air cushion between fabric and glass. It is precisely this air cushion that slows the heat exchange.

Honeycomb roller blind: air chambers insulate

The greatest effect comes from the honeycomb roller blind. Its fabric has a honeycomb structure and encloses an air cushion in each chamber. Still air is an excellent insulator – which is why a honeycomb blind insulates significantly more than a single-layer fabric. Winter and summer

The benefit works both ways:

  • Winter: The air cushion keeps the heating warmth in the room – especially at night, when it's coldest outside.
  • Summer: A fabric with a light or reflective coating throws back part of the solar energy before it heats up the room.

As close to the window as possible

The insulating effect depends on the enclosed air cushion – and that only works if the edge gaps are small. A roller blind with a cassette or side guide encloses the air all around and therefore works more strongly than a freely hanging roller blind. No substitute for good windows – but noticeable

Honestly assessed: a roller blind doesn't replace insulated windows. But it reduces heat loss at existing windows noticeably and costs only a fraction of a renovation. Especially in rented flats, where the windows can't be replaced, it's the obvious measure.
