In 4 Schritten

What you measure and decide

1

Fensterbreite

Measure the width of the curtain track or rod (not the window). This width is the basis for the fabric quantity.

2

Faltenfaktor

For a nice wave drape, multiply the width by 2 bis 2,5. Plain = 2×, richly pleated = 2.5×. That is the total fabric width you need.

3

Finished height

Measure from the hanging point to the desired lower edge — floor-length, to the sill or lightly resting.

4

Saumzugaben

Pro Curtain ca. +20–25 cm to add for the top and bottom hem. For width-run fabric, also allow for side hems.

Required fabric width = Schienenbreite × Faltenfaktor (2 bis 2,5)

Raumhoch (300 cm high, 1 m wide): linear metres = required fabric width in metres. The height is already covered at 300 cm.

Bahnenware (140 cm wide, 1 m high): number of widths = required fabric width ÷ 1.40 m (round up) · linear metres = widths × (height + hem).

Rechenbeispiel

Window 200 cm wide, 260 cm high

Fullness factor 2.2 → required fabric width = 2.00 m × 2.2 = 4,40 m.

Rule of thumb: Room-height fabric is often cheaper and simpler for tall windows, because the full height is covered without a horizontal seam. Width-run fabric pays off for lower windows or when you need a specific pattern. When in doubt 1 Laufmeter more plan a little extra — leftover fabric can be used for cushions or tiebacks.
