Day curtains — what you should know

How do I wash a day curtain?
+
Most day curtain fabrics can go in the washing machine — on a delicate cycle at 30 degrees, without fabric softener and without spinning. Hung up damp, the panel pulls itself back into shape — no ironing needed. What each individual fabric can take is stated on its label — if in doubt, just ask me.

How much can be seen in the evening?

How much fabric does it take for beautiful folds?

That depends on the type of pleat. Hanging flat needs little extra fabric; Swiss cartridge pleats and wave pleats need double the fabric width. That is why the same window costs more with pleats — but the curtain hangs more calmly and looks fuller.

Both versions let daylight into the room — they differ in how much you can see through the fabric. Fine voiles let plenty of light through and lay a soft veil in front of the window. The room stays bright and the direct view from outside is broken during the day — ideal when lightness is what matters. Densely woven, opaque fabrics reliably protect against being seen — no one can see in from outside, while the room stays bright during the day. Ideal for windows right on the street or close to neighbours.
Protected by day — and what applies in the evening
+
By day it is brighter outside than in: the fabric reflects the light, from outside people see only the curtain — and you keep the view out. In the evening that reverses: as soon as the lights are on inside, sheer fabrics become partly see-through from outside. A day curtain alone therefore does not give full privacy in the evening. The proven solution: an opaque night curtain or Blackout curtain on the second track — open during the day, drawn in the evening.
