Frequently asked questions about blackout roller blinds in Zurich

What does a made-to-measure blackout roller blind cost in Zurich?

Guide price from CHF 135 (60 × 100 cm, price group E, basic roller blind). You can see the exact price for your measurements straight away in the configurator — no registration needed.

Does it really get completely dark?

Through the fabric, yes — most of the remaining light comes past at the edge. With a cassette and side guide rails this gap drops to a minimum; with no guidance at all, a fine rim of light remains all around.

Blackout or dimout — what is the difference?

Blackout fabrics are coated on the back and let practically no light through the surface. dimout only darkens strongly and lets a residual twilight through. Anyone woken in the morning despite having «blackout» usually had dimout.

Mechanism & fittings

The mechanism behind the Blackout

Practically no light comes through a genuine blackout fabric. Whether it really stays dark in the morning is decided by the mechanism all around it — roller tube, cassette, guide rails. We build these from fittings by LEHA in Germany and Silga in Switzerland, both a benchmark for precision and durability for decades.

Blackout roller blinds — what you should know

What does a made-to-measure blackout roller blind cost? +

How do I care for my roller blind? +

A a wipe for dust from time to time is enough. Should a stain appear, dab it with a barely damp, fine cloth rather than rubbing — coated blackout fabrics do not like scrubbing. If the fabric is damaged, we replace just the fabric; the roller tube and mechanism stay at the window.

What makes a genuine blackout roller blind +

Not every dark roller blind really blacks out. Two things are decisive: an opaque weave — and how the blind is guided at the edge of the window. A genuine blackout fabric is coated on the back and lets practically no light through the surface. dimout fabrics only darken strongly — they let a residual twilight through. Most of the remaining light comes past the edge, not through the fabric. With a cassette at the top and side guide rails the blind runs guided — the light gap is reduced to a minimum.

How a blackout roller blind really gets dark +

The first point is the fabric. A genuine blackout roller blind has a fabric coated on the back through whose surface practically no light passes. To be distinguished from this is dimout: these qualities darken strongly but let a soft residual twilight through. Anyone who thinks they bought blackout and is still woken in the morning usually had dimout. The second — and often underestimated — point is the guidance of the blind. Even a perfectly light-tight fabric is of little use if light gets past all around. In practice most residual light comes from the gap at the sides and top, not from the fabric. With a cassette at the top and side guide rails, the blind runs guided along the frame — light ingress drops to a minimum. From that follows the mounting recommendation: if you want maximum darkness, do not mount inside the reveal but in front of it on the wall or ceiling and let the blind extend generously beyond the window opening at the sides. Inside the reveal a fine edge gap always remains for structural reasons. For rented flats there are clamp brackets — the blackout effect is somewhat weaker there, but no drilling is needed.

Stops exactly where you let go +

You pull the chain — and the roller blind stops at any height you like. Fully closed, half open, just a gap: you control light and view steplessly, with no fixed notches. Half open — privacy at the top, a clear view below. Fully closed — the window completely covered, full privacy. You choose in the configurator which side the operating chain hangs on, left or right. On request we also supply the blind with a motor and radio remote control; simply ask us.

Does a blackout roller blind also help against heat? +

Where it really has to be dark Roller blinds for the bedroom Heat protection Keeps the heat out too The light-coloured coated backing reflects part of the solar radiation before it heats the room. This is what determines the gap of light Calculate the price in the configurator Application Sleeping, shift work, home cinema For shift workers, light-sensitive sleepers, the afternoon nap in a children's room or the projector room — anywhere dimout is not enough. A welcome side effect: the light-coloured coated backing reflects part of the solar radiation and thus acts as heat protection. Kept closed during the day, it stays noticeably cooler.
